Which Chinese Zodiac Animal Is January?
No animal belongs to January itself. Your sign follows Lunar New Year, which never falls before Jan 21. So anyone born from Jan 1 to Jan 20 has the animal of the year before, in every year from 1900 to 2036. From Jan 21 to Jan 31 it depends on the year.
Take Jan 15, 1990. The calendar year is 1990, but Lunar New Year came on Jan 27, so this birthday is still in the Chinese year 1989, the Year of the Snake. A birthday on Jan 28, 1990 is a Horse.
Which Chinese Zodiac Animal Is February?
February depends on the year. Lunar New Year never falls after Feb 20, so a birthday on Feb 21 or later always takes the animal of that calendar year. Between Feb 1 and Feb 20, check that year’s date: Lunar New Year was Feb 5 in 2000 and Feb 19 in 2015, but Jan 28 in 1998.
The earliest date in the data is Jan 21 (1966) and the latest is Feb 20 (1920 and 1985). Across 1900 to 2036, Lunar New Year fell in January in 49 years and in February in 88.

Why Does Lunar New Year Move Every Year?
The Chinese calendar follows the moon, so Lunar New Year is the new moon that falls between Jan 21 and Feb 20. A lunar year is about 11 days shorter than a solar year, which is why the date shifts from year to year. Dates on this site use China Standard Time.
Most people go by their calendar birthday where they were born. If you were born on the day before or the day of Lunar New Year, you may want to check the time in China too. For how the dates are produced, see the methodology. Lunar age also changes on Lunar New Year, as the lunar age calculator shows, and the next date is on the Chinese New Year 2027 page.
