Chinese New Year Traditions

Most customs are about luck, family and a fresh start: red for good fortune, food with lucky names, and a clean house before the first day.

Red Envelopes

Money in a red packet (红包, hóngbāo) is given by elders and employers to children and younger adults, and now often sent digitally. Red stands for luck.

Red and Gold Decorations

Couplets with good wishes frame doors, and the character 福 (fú, fortune) is often hung upside down because the word for upside down sounds like the word for arrive.

Lucky Food

Fish suggests surplus, dumplings look like old gold ingots, and sweet rice cake (年糕, niángāo) sounds like "higher every year".

Fireworks and Lion Dances

Noise is said to scare away bad luck. Many cities now limit fireworks, so lion and dragon dances are the main show.

People born in a Goat year are in their own sign year in 2027, and many of them wear red (see the Goat horoscope for 2027).

Chinese New Year Greetings

Say 新年快乐 (Xīnnián kuàilè) to wish anyone a happy new year. In Cantonese, the common wish is 恭喜發財, gung hei fat choy.
