What We Collect
We do not ask for your name, email address or any other personal details, and the site has no sign-up, login or comment feature.
The Chinese zodiac calculator runs entirely in your browser. The date you type is used to find your sign on your own device and is not sent to our server.
Analytics
We use Google Analytics 4 to see which pages are read and how people reach them. It only runs on chineseyearanimals.com. Outside Europe it runs as soon as you visit. In Europe it waits for your consent (see Your choices below). Where it runs, Google Analytics sets cookies and records information such as the pages you view, your browser and device type, your approximate location and how you arrived. We use it in aggregate to improve the site.
The calculator also sends a few events to Google Analytics:
- that a sign was calculated, whether an exact month and day was used, and the animal and Chinese year that came out;
- that the date picker was opened or a result was shared;
- which result link was clicked.
The month, day and year you typed are not sent. The Chinese year and animal in the result are, and those can reveal your birth year to Google Analytics.
Shared Result Links
The share button copies a link that contains the date you entered, for example /?y=1998&m=3&d=3. Anyone who opens that link sees the same result. The address of the page, including that date, is then visible to Google Analytics like any other page address. Share a link only if you are happy to share the date in it.
Hosting
The site is served by Cloudflare. Like any host, Cloudflare handles requests for pages and may keep standard technical logs such as IP address and browser type to deliver the site and keep it secure. We do not use this to identify you.
Your Choices
If you are in the EU, the European Economic Area, the UK or Switzerland, Google Analytics does not set cookies until you accept in the banner at the bottom of the page. Your choice is saved in your browser, and you can change it at any time.
- You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings, and the site still works.
- Google provides a browser add-on that stops Google Analytics from collecting data about your visits.
- Content blockers and "do not track" tools also stop the analytics from loading, and the calculator still works.
Children, Changes and Questions
The site is general-audience and is not directed at children under 13. We collect no personal details from anyone.
If this policy changes, the date at the top of the page changes with it. For questions about privacy, email Jenny at the address on the contact page.
