1950 Metal Tiger: Nearly Seven Weeks Late
Lunar New Year 1950 fell on Feb 17, 1950, about as late as it ever comes. Everyone born from January 1 to Feb 16, 1950 is an Earth Ox from the 1949 year. That is close to seven weeks of births, so check a 1950 birthday before you buy a Tiger card.
The year name 庚寅 has the sound element 松柏木, “pine and cypress wood,” in Chinese tradition: evergreens that stand through winter. 1950 Tigers turn 76 in 2026 and 77 in 2027.
Born in January or Early February 1950?
The Chinese year does not start on January 1. Lunar New Year 1950 was on Friday, Feb 17, 1950, so births before that date belong to the year before.
| Born | Sign | Year name |
|---|---|---|
| Jan 1 to Feb 16, 1950 | Earth Ox | 己丑 |
| Feb 17, 1950 to Feb 5, 1951 | Metal Tiger | 庚寅 |
So someone born on Feb 16, 1950 is an Earth Ox, and someone born on Feb 17, 1950 is a Metal Tiger. Dates are in China Standard Time.
What Is a Metal Tiger?
A Metal Tiger combines the Tiger with the element of the birth year. 1950 ends in 0, which gives Metal. The element repeats every 60 years, so other Metal Tiger years include 2010.
