The Fire Pig Year That Ran Into 1948
The 1947 Chinese year started early, on Jan 22, 1947, and did not end until Feb 9, 1948. Two groups need care: people born in early January 1947 are Fire Dogs from the year before, and people born in January or early February 1948 are still Fire Pigs.
Its year name 丁亥 shares the sound element 屋上土, “earth on the roof,” with 1946. The Pig is the last of the twelve animals, so a 1947 Pig closes the round that the 1948 Rat opens. 1947 Pigs turn 79 in 2026 and 80 in 2027.
Born in January or Early February 1947?
The Chinese year does not start on January 1. Lunar New Year 1947 was on Wednesday, Jan 22, 1947, so births before that date belong to the year before.
| Born | Sign | Year name |
|---|---|---|
| Jan 1 to Jan 21, 1947 | Fire Dog | 丙戌 |
| Jan 22, 1947 to Feb 9, 1948 | Fire Pig | 丁亥 |
So someone born on Jan 21, 1947 is a Fire Dog, and someone born on Jan 22, 1947 is a Fire Pig. Dates are in China Standard Time.
What Is a Fire Pig?
A Fire Pig combines the Pig with the element of the birth year. 1947 ends in 7, which gives Fire. The element repeats every 60 years, so other Fire Pig years include 2007.

Compatibility follows the animal, not the element. Tradition favors the signs in the Pig's trine group and its Secret Friend, and is cautious about the opposite sign and the harm pair.
